Rod Dean will present his talk The Development of the Gloster Meteor at our 2018 Christmas Events and Buffet on Saturday 1 December.
Rod has had a distinguished career in aviation. After 21 years with the RAF, he worked for a flight simulation company before going on to spend 15 years with the Civil Aviation Authority, including a stint a flying display director at the world famous Farnborough International Air Show. He also became an experienced warbird pilot, flying the Spitfire, Mustang, Corsair, Wildcat, Sea Fury, Bearcat, Hurricane, Harvard and Skyraider. As well as pistons, Rod has flown a number of vintage jet aircraft including the Hunter, Vampire, Venom, T33, F86 Sabre, and the Meteor. His autobiography, Fifty Years of Flying Fun, was published in 2015.
The Gloster Meteor was the RAF’s first operational jet fighter and this year marks the 75th anniversary of its first flight, so it is a very apt subject for our 2018 Christmas event. Rod will describe the development of the early jet engines and aircraft that led to the Meteor; how it was developed throughout its RAF career and the various different marks of the aircraft. His illustrated talk will also look at the Meteor’s use for a wide variety of experimental activities, its post front-line use and, finally, a review of the surviving flying Meteors – still around after 70 years!
